Boston has so many amazing places to have a small wedding or elopement - but they’re definitely not all created equal!
As a Boston photographer who photographs a lot of intimate weddings and elopements, I’ve gotten to see firsthand what some of these locations are actually like on a wedding day. How private are they? How easy is it to take photos afterward? Can you bring guests? And, most importantly, does the experience actually live up to how pretty it looks online?
So, I thought I’d start keeping track! I’m rating the intimate ceremony and elopement locations I’ve photographed around Boston based on things like the ceremony space itself, privacy, photo opportunities, logistics, and overall experience.
And I’m keeping these ratings honest — because a beautiful location can still come with a few things you’ll want to know before choosing it.
My goal isn’t to find one “best” place to get married, but to help you figure out which one feels right for the kind of day you’re planning. These are in no particlular order!

I absolutely adore pretty much everything about Boston City Hall (though I do wish the outside was maybe... a little warmer, lol). I’ve photographed quite a few ceremonies here, and I really do think the city does a great job creating a memorable spot to tie the knot!
One of my favorite things about City Hall is that there are actually so many different spots to take photos. Even the waiting area before you walk to your ceremony is absolutely adorable! The whole process is also really simple and straightforward, while still feeling personal. I also have to give a big shoutout to Paul, who does such a wonderful job officiating and making the ceremony feel special!
The ceremonies themselves usually take around 7–10 minutes, but can definitely go a little longer. I’ve never felt like the officiants rush couples or their families out of the space, which is a huge perk in my book.
The flip side of that is that appointments can sometimes create a bit of a domino effect throughout the day. You may have to wait past your scheduled ceremony time, especially if you've booked in the afternoon. The longest delay I’ve personally experienced has been around 20 minutes. So if you’re planning photos, lunch reservations, or anything else immediately afterward, I’d definitely give yourself a little wiggle room!
And of course, there isn’t a ton of privacy at City Hall. You’ll probably see other couples and families coming and going while you’re there, but honestly, I think that’s part of the charm! There’s something really sweet about seeing all the other couples tying the knot on the same day as you :)

I think the Boston Public Library is a fantastic choice for couples having an intimate celebration in Boston, but looking for something a little more private than City Hall. It’s also a great choice if you really want some moody, vibe-y photos from your day! And a huge bonus is that it’s fairly affordable compared to a lot of other venues in Boston — in 2027, ceremonies are $300 for up to 18 guests.
One thing to keep in mind is that getting a ceremony appointment at the BPL can be competitive. While I haven’t gone through the booking process myself, dates are selected through a lottery system. Because of that, you may have a little less flexibility when planning your day, especially if you have guests traveling from farther away. Ceremonies are also currently only offered on select Mondays, so it’s definitely not going to work for every couple.
The Guastavino Room itself feels incredibly private and does a great job of keeping the busy noise of Copley Square out. It’s a beautiful, intimate space, and the acoustics are amazing — even music playing from an iPhone can carry wonderfully throughout the room!
And, of course, it’s an amazing place for couple portraits. The architecture inside gives you those darker, moodier photos that feel completely different from a lot of other Boston ceremony locations. Then, once you step outside, you have Copley Square and the surrounding Back Bay area right there if you want even more variety.

I think Somerville City Hall is a lovely choice for couples looking for something a little more low-key compared to Boston City Hall, but still wanting a ceremony space that feels intimate and warm.
The ceremony I photographed here was indoors, but there is also an outdoor ceremony option. The steps outside City Hall are beautiful for photos as well, although on a really sunny day, the light can be pretty harsh depending on the time of day. The ceremony itself was in their registry room, and overall, I wouldn't recommend having more than 8 people as guests for the space.
One thing I would keep in mind is that there aren’t quite as many immediate options for couple portraits afterward compared to getting married somewhere like Boston City Hall. There are definitely spots around Somerville you can head to, but you may need to plan on driving or taking an Uber somewhere else if having a lot of variety in your portraits is important to you.
That being said, if you’re looking for something simple, intimate, and a little quieter than getting married right in the middle of Boston, I think Somerville City Hall is a really sweet option, especially if it's where you call home!

The Ropes Mansion & Garden is such a beautiful option if you’re looking for an intimate outdoor ceremony, especially if you love the idea of making a day out of being in Salem!
I’ve photographed a ceremony here, and one of my favorite things about it is how intimate the garden can feel while still giving you plenty of space to move around. There’s so much greenery and so many little corners to work with for photos, so you don’t necessarily need to leave immediately after your ceremony to get a good variety of portraits.
That being said, the garden is still open to the public, so privacy is definitely something to keep in mind! You may have people walking around or exploring the garden while you’re there. Personally, I don’t think it takes away from how special the space feels, but if having a completely private ceremony is really important to you, it’s something I’d consider.
Another huge perk is that you’re right in Salem! Once you’re finished at the garden, you can head out and explore some of the surrounding streets for even more photos and make the ceremony just one part of your day.
And, of course, because this is an outdoor ceremony location, weather is going to play a role. But on a beautiful day, I think it’s such a lovely option for couples who want something relaxed, intimate, and surrounded by greenery without renting a traditional wedding venue.

haven't actually shot an elopment here - basing rating on vibes / what I know!

Full transparency — I haven’t actually photographed a ceremony in the Public Garden yet! But I have photographed plenty of couples here and have stopped by the Garden for portraits during elopement days, so I still wanted to include it as an option.
And honestly, even if you don’t have your ceremony here, I think it’s one of the best places to stop for photos during an intimate wedding or elopement in Boston.
The biggest thing to keep in mind is that the Public Garden is exactly that - public! It can get incredibly busy, especially on weekends and during the warmer months. If you choose to have your ceremony here, you’ll likely have people walking by, sitting nearby, and possibly even stopping to watch. So if having a really private ceremony is important to you, this probably wouldn’t be my first choice.
From a photography perspective though, I absolutely love it. You have the pond, bridges, greenery, flowers, city views, and so many little spots to work with without having to walk very far. Beacon Hill is also right across the street, so it’s really easy to get a completely different look without having to get in a car or Uber anywhere.
Weather and time of day are definitely worth considering too. There isn’t much of a backup plan if it rains, and the Garden can be pretty bright and busy in the middle of the day. Earlier mornings and evenings tend to give you softer light and fewer crowds.
So while I can’t personally review what it’s like to actually have your ceremony here just yet, I can absolutely vouch for it as a beautiful stop to include in your wedding or elopement day!

This year I photographed a reception celebration at Sacco’s Bowl Haven, and it was SO much fun!! You can see more of the coverage from that day here.
While I haven’t photographed a ceremony itself here, I do think it’s such a fun option for an intimate reception — especially if you’re planning to have your ceremony somewhere else in the city first.
It’s fairly quick to get to from Boston (around a 15–20 minute Uber ride depending on traffic), and there was plenty of space for around 40–50 guests without having to rent out the entire space. Having bowling as an activity was also such a great touch. Honestly, people of all ages were joining in throughout the evening, which was so fun to see and gave everyone something to do beyond just eating and drinking!
I think this would be an especially great choice if you wanted to have your ceremony at City Hall or somewhere else around Boston, take some photos around the city afterward, and then head over to Somerville for a much more relaxed reception with your friends and family.
And of course — they have delicious pizza and a full bar, which is always a win in my book!
Overall, I think Sacco’s is a really fun option if you want your reception to feel less like a traditional wedding reception and more like a big night out with all of your favorite people.

The MIT Chapel is such a unique spot for an intimate ceremony in Cambridge! I photographed a small ceremony here, and I absolutely loved how cozy and intimate the space felt, even though the chapel itself can accommodate quite a few more guests.
The inside is definitely the star of the show. It’s dark and moody, with curved brick walls and this beautiful installation hanging above the altar that catches the light coming up from below. It photographs SO differently from pretty much every other ceremony spot on this list, which I absolutely love!
It’s also a great location if you want to take some couple portraits afterward. For the wedding I photographed here, we took some photos around the nearby courtyard and MIT’s campus, which gave us a really nice change of scenery without having to go far at all. You also have the Charles River nearby if you want to venture out a little more!
One thing to keep in mind is that the chapel is primarily available to members of the MIT community, and there is a $1,000 fee to use the space if you are not a member. That said, as it's such a unique spot, I definitely think it's worth considering!

Another absolutely gorgeous location for a ceremony! I've only photographed one wedding here so far, but Cambridge City Hall is such a beautiful option for couples looking for something a little different. The historic architecture, grand staircase, and beautiful details throughout the building make it such a lovely backdrop for wedding photos!
It's also a great option if you're hoping for a more intimate ceremony while still having that classic, romantic City Hall feel. And with so many beautiful spots around Cambridge, there are plenty of opportunities to explore and take portraits afterward.

French Library in Boston

The French Library is a spot I haven’t had the chance to photograph yet, but it is HIGH on my list! Located on Marlborough Street in Back Bay, the library is inside a beautiful historic Victorian mansion and feels like such a hidden gem for an intimate ceremony in the city.
There are several different spaces available to rent, but the Reading Room especially caught my eye for smaller celebrations. The room is lined with books, has beautiful large windows overlooking Marlborough and Berkeley Streets, and can be used for ceremonies and intimate gatherings.
I also absolutely love the location. You’re already surrounded by some of the prettiest streets in Back Bay, so after your ceremony we could head straight outside for portraits along Marlborough Street, Commonwealth Ave, or make our way toward the Public Garden and Beacon Hill.
I haven’t photographed a wedding here myself yet, so I can’t give this one a full review just yet — but if you’re looking for something intimate, historic, and a little different from the more traditional Boston wedding venues, I definitely think this one is worth checking out!
Beacon Hill Books & Cafe

Beacon Hill Books & Cafe looks like such a fun option for couples looking for something a little different for their intimate wedding. Located right on Charles Street in the heart of Beacon Hill, it’s a beautiful little bookstore and cafe that can also be rented for private events and celebrations.
I’ve photographed an intimate wedding here, and I absolutely loved how cozy the entire day felt. The space already has so much character between the bookshelves, beautiful little rooms, cafe, and courtyard that you really don’t need to do much to make it feel special.
One of the biggest perks for me is definitely the location. You can step outside and immediately be in one of the prettiest neighborhoods in Boston! We can wander around Beacon Hill for portraits, head toward the Public Garden, or even make a few different stops without needing to get into an Uber.
It’s definitely a better fit for couples who are keeping things small, but I think that’s part of what makes it so special. Rather than feeling like you’re trying to make a huge wedding venue work for a tiny guest list, the space already feels naturally intimate.
If you love books, cozy spaces, and the idea of getting married somewhere that doesn't necessarily feel like a traditional wedding venue, this is definitely one of my favorite options in Boston!
