Missy and Shuhei’s Intimate Winter Wedding
I could not have been more excited when Missy's mom reached out to me about her daughter's at the Boston Public Library.
I loved getting to know Missy over the phone shortly after. We talked about how she was envisioning their celebration: intimate, low-stress, and surrounded only by their favorite people. They chose the Boston Public Library for their ceremony, a stunning space that elevates the simplest of vows into something truly timeless. It’s the kind of setting that doesn't need a lot of decoration to feel grand—just the presence of those who matter most.
The Moments Before
When the day finally arrived, the library felt like the right choice for them. Missy, her mom, and her sister were tucked away in a quiet corner, focusing on the small details, adjusting veil adjustment, a final touch of lipstick. Instantly, they made me feel so comfortable; it’s a detail I always appreciate. While I prefer to be a quiet observer in the background, getting to know the people I’m photographing makes the work feel so much more meaningful.
There was a palpable sense of anticipation in the room. I’ve always found these moments just before everything begins to be the most honest—that space between the nerves and the reality of the day.
We found a quiet moment for Missy and Shuhei to see each other before the ceremony began. Watching them connect, seeing Missy’s shoulders drop as she finally felt at ease—it was a private exhale for both of them.
Because they had kept the guest list to just 12 people, every arrival felt significant. Since the library requires all guests to be present before moving into the Guastavino Room, I was able to watch the connections unfold in real-time. Each guest’s reaction to seeing them was so genuine, and you could feel the warmth between the family—the kind of ease that only comes when you’re surrounded by the people who know you best.
The Ceremony
Walking into the Guastavino Room, my breath was honestly taken away. It is such a stunning location for a ceremony, especially if you’re looking for somewhere with a real sense of place.
The room itself is huge, but it's the light that really steals the show. We had a 2:15 p.m. ceremony in January, and I was so struck by how that low winter sun just completely filled the space. It felt intentional and bright, even in the middle of winter.
Beyond the lighting, the massive bookcases are a constant reminder that you’re in such a historic, beautiful setting. It has that grand, classic feel without being stuffy. During the ceremony, the couple played music right from their phones—which actually filled the room surprisingly well—and the acoustics just made everything feel that much more intimate.
A Quiet Moment to Themselves
After the ceremony, Missy and Shuhei finally had a moment to just take it all in. When shooting portraits, I never want my couples to feel uncomfortable or like they're "posing" at all. Instead, I focus on guiding them into playful situations where they can just connect while I click away.
The library is actually quite strict about keeping photos contained to the specific room you booked, so after we finished inside, we headed out for an adventure. We captured portraits against the library’s exterior and found some beautiful spots around Copley Square. There is something about the contrast of that massive stone architecture and the energy of the city that made their quiet connection stand out even more.
Celebration at Flatbreads
My favorite part of the day was seeing all that love come together at Flatbread Company in Somerville. If you haven't been, it’s such an adorable bowling alley and pizza spot. The vibe was so fun, and it was clear that everyone—from the youngest kids to the adults—was having an absolute blast.
I love how Missy and Shuhei designed their day. By starting with an intimate ceremony and opening up to a larger reception in the evening, they got the best of both worlds. The night was just filled with pure joy; every time I caught a glimpse of them, they looked so genuinely, simply in love.
During these moments, my focus isn't on directing or posing. Instead, I slip quietly into the background to capture those honest moments of laughter and the tightest embraces. I was so excited to be a part of this day—it was a perfect reminder that weddings don't have to follow a script to be incredibly meaningful.
