Tanner reached out in March with a pretty clear vision. He wanted to propose somewhere that meant something to the two of them. They're huge Red Sox fans. They had their first date at Yard House. He even asked about shooting inside the stadium, which I looked into. We were planning to work around the ballpark, Lansdowne Street, all of it.

Then April 11th came, and there was a minor league game that day.

The Pivot

The crowds around Fenway on a game day, even a minor one, are a lot. We moved the proposal to the Back Bay Fens, which is right around the corner. It's one of those spots that people walk past without really stopping. Softer than the Public Garden, more natural, less manicured. The paths wind through open fields and the rose garden area, and the light there in the late afternoon is really good.

The proposal happened in the Fens. It was calm and quiet, which is exactly what you want.

Then we went back to Fenway.

After, we walked over to Lansdowne Street for the portrait part of the session. The big green wall, the brick, the signage. For two people who have been going to games together for years, it was the right place to be. You can feel it in the photos.

We finished at Yard House, where they had their first date. Low key, warm, and at some point they completely forgot I was there. Those are always the shots I'm waiting for.

What I took away from this one.

The original plan changed on the day and the session ended up being better for it. Three locations, each one different, all of them adding up to something that actually looks like these two people.

Proposals don't always go exactly as planned. That's fine. You just need someone with a camera who knows how to adapt!
